If you’re wondering how to teach English online and travel the world as a digital nomad then you’ve come to the right place. Alternatively if you are a looking to work from home then this is also the place for you.

I’m about to give away the biggest secret to how I manage to earn a large income without having to “go to work”.

There are many companies you can use to teach English online, if you’re from the USA there are a lot more options than if you’re from the UK like me.

The company I work for is rapidly growing with more and more students each day so more and more teachers are needed!

Lets talk about Palfish. Palfish is an online learning platform for Chinese students.

Before we begin I just want to let you know that if you use my referral code: 23678281 you will get a free lifetime access to my Palfish tips and tricks. As one of the fasted growing teachers on the platform I’ve made ¥53,459.19 Chinese Yuan in two months. (That’s £6,199.91 or $7,533.44).

Can Anyone Work For Palfish?

Yes. you don’t need a degree, you don’t need to be a mathematic genius, you don’t even need to be a native speaker necessarily, (more about that later).

How Much Do You Get Paid on Palfish?

So for the Palfish official kids course the payment is between 55-75 yuan for a 25 minute class.

Thats: £12 – £17 per hour or $15.85 – $21.60 per hour (depending on current exchange rates).

Now, the reason the wage changes is because each month your wage is based on the hours that you put in the month before.

How To Become a Palfish Teacher

One of my favourite things about teaching on palfish is being able to choose my own schedule and literally work anywhere in the world (as long as there’s WiFi).

All you need when joining Palfish is a TEFL qualification. I got a massive discount on my qualification on wowcher.com and it cost me a grand total of £20 and took me two weeks to complete but it is easily doable in one week.

My number one tip that I cannot stress enough: Do not make an account on the palfish app before you’ve got all of the ingredients ready. Before you sign up, get your certificate, a photocopy of your ID, make sure you have a name suitable for teaching like: “Teacher Beth” for example. If you don’t have all of the information you need before you sign up, you could fail your verification and this will make it a little bit of a harder process. Be ready, be organised and be professional!

What is Palfish?

There are two types of teaching on Palfish: FreeTalk and OKC (Official Kids Course).

Freetalk is where you set your own rate and then you can “start tutoring” when ever you like and for as long as you like. People (mostly adults) will be able to call you to talk about what ever they like. Although I haven’t used the free talk option since I first started on Palfish, I’ve always had wonderful experiences from it.  Being able to talk to people from China is so interesting. Most of the time they are happy to tell you all about their culture. You don’t need to be a native English speaker for freetalk.

The other type of teaching and what I choose to do five days a week is The Official Kids Course (OKC). Firstly you’ll need to take the interview. It’s a quick easy process of showcasing how you would teach a lesson. There’s nothing to worry about because all the lessons have pre planned slides a little like a power point presentation with lots of pictures and words.

They even have a little box at the bottom of each page telling you what to say! So you just need to go through each slide with the child. And then once you’ve passed the interview, parents can book their children to have lessons with you. The more good reviews you get and the more hours you do, the more regular students you’ll get.

  1. Hi Beth
I’m thinking of doing a TEFL course. I’ve looked at wowcher and wondered if it is the 120 hr online course I should do?

What happens if I am going away for a few days and can’t teach. Do I just put in my online diary that i am away (i’m assuming there is a diary for the hours i want to work)

    Thank you

    • Hi Lynda!

So yes, the 120 hour one would be fine. I did a 160 hour because it happened to come with an extra qualification. However you only need the TEFL. As long as the certificate comes with a certificate number it will be perfect.

So you can basically see three weeks of your schedule, and your students can book two weeks in advance. so you can sort everything out and work exactly the hours you want to work. I’m actually about to have a week off to visit my family so I just closed off my available slots. Its as simple as that 🙂

I hope this helps, let me know if you have any more questions!

      • Thank you so much for replying so quickly. Maybe I’ll look at the 160 hr qualification.

Being able to block off time is brilliant for me as I like to go away a lot and can’t always work.

No more questions for the time being.

        Thanks again

        Lynda x
