As one of the most liveable cities in the world, Melbourne is bursting with cheap and free things to do. So if you’re looking for the best cheap things to do in Melbourne, you’ve come to the right place.
Here are the ultimate top 8:
Melbourne Royal Botanical Gardens
Visit the 30 different plant collections including Australia Forrest, California garden, cacti and succulents, herb garden and the tropical display glasshouse.
This is the perfect place to spend the day relaxing in the grass or taking artsy photos.
Melbourne Street Art Tour / Explore The Famous Lane Ways
Pick up a map at the information center and discover some of the most interesting street art and outdoor galleries in the world. While you’re at it, use this opportunity to explore Melbourne’s famous laneways.
Lentil As Anything
Pop into your Local Lentil As Anything and “pay as you feel”, you can find them in St Kilda, Abbotsford, Thornbury, and Newtown.
Here you’ll find huge portions of high quality vegan/ vegetarian food (the best food I had in Australia).
At the end of your meal, pay as much as you can afford or as much as you think the food is worth.
Lentil As Anything aims to provide food without borders: without borders of race, age or gender, finance or social status.
This place never fails to give me the warm fuzzies.
Try The Best Vegan Ice Cream In St Kilda
With so many ice creams shops, cafes and of course the beach, it’s easy to spend the whole day in St Kilda. If you hang around till sunset you’ll see lots of penguins from the pier.
Visit The National Gallery Of Victoria
Otherwise known as the NGV, this gallery is completely free to visit and has endless rooms filled with interesting pieces of artwork and modern installments.
Brighton Beach
Dendy Street Beach, just south of middle Brighton, features 82 colorful beach huts.
These unique beach huts self or around A$200,000 despite their lack of facilities. Each hut is painted with an individual design making Brighton beach one of the most iconic beaches in the state.
Behold The State Library Of Victoria
Wander around the most instagrammable, aesthetically pleasing and symmetrical library and read all about the local history. Gaze down into the domed reading room from the balcony above and marvel at its perfect symmetry.
Visit Melbourne’s Famous Markets
Last but defiantly not least are Melbourne’s markets. My personal favorite being Queen Vic market, visit in the day time for a spot of shopping, or at night for all the street food you can imagine plus live music.
Whether you’re shopping for clothes, fruit, and veg, souvenirs or jewelry, you’ll find it all here.
Okay, I hope that’s given you a little idea of all the cheap and free things to do in Melbourne!
